Celestial Tournament: The Fourth Aftermath

Wow. Just wow. Finished up with our match not too long ago and I'm still reeling. The emotions are, they're just overwhelming. I can scarcely begin to settle down and describe it. But let me take you to the end of our round as we sealed our victory.

An epic battle tonight as we waited for the clock to tick down. Further, further until the call went out for everyone to push up. "Get around him everybody! Around! Now!" and as the last second slipped away we took the screenshot. Which is now, no doubt working it's way slowly towards the tournament officials. We had to think long and hard to come up with a winning strategy. And I've been sworn not to divulge our secrets.

You want a hint? Well, alright.

3...2..1.. Forfeit spike!

Yeah, so another round, another no-show. That leaves us 3-1 with only one victory earned by actually beating another team. We're still in the top 3rd of the bracket which means we can expect another really tough match next round, no doubt. G fucking g, scheduling.

Haven't heard what RoX did yet but the Mothership also won by default. Just great, really.

Meh.

I just hope that Bill (or whoever OoX's tournament leader is) actually tried to arrange reasonable times, instead of pulling an iQ.

I guess my guild got lucky in that Akaraxle and I were on IRC at the same time and we convinced our respective GLs to schedule it for the weekend.

We tried to do some stuff short notice on the weekend, but either they were not around nor our guys were around. I am not the tourny leader, but as far as I can tell they never really responded back with proposed times.

Right. We absolutely didn't try to screw this team over. And, in fact, I'm, at the very least, thinking of writing to Mr. Gills and asking him to declare this a tie, at the very least, because there's no way we win this fight if it's actually played. And that's just not fair to our opponent. We're not the only team this hasn't happened to and we shouldn't get an advantage like this just because we happen to play at a difficult time to schedule.

Every night since the match was announced, we've tried to be on with enough people to play just as we tried to contact them and scedule multiple times. Maybe we should have been a bit more prepared to play on Saturday but we pretty much knew in advance that we weren't going to have some people because of prior commitments. In any event, we could never set a time with our opponents nor catch them online even then.

And because of those prior commitments, it's hard for us to get a team together before 6PM PST. People have to get done with work and school and whatever. But that's already 2AM GMT. So you can see why we had some difficulties here. But I suspect, as Billiard says, they never really responded back because they had, for all intents and purposes, given up. Like a lot of Euro guilds they knew they were going to get screwed by the scheduling and that we'd likely hold firm in the hopes of making them play at a bad time or something (Which, you know, we would have had to but only because that's the only time we *could* play. Without making the kind of sacrifices Mr. Gills apparently expects of all of us, anyway, even though we've already been changing shifts, putting off other things, and going out of our way for this tournament.) so they didn't bother.

Well I did say in my very first post about this match that ought to offer to forfeit if they couldn't make the fallback time. We'll see how that goes now I guess.

For myself, I think this tournament is doing well to keep us motivated and improve, so losing this match either by playing or forfeit is not really that big of a deal to me. Winning by forfeit though just doesn't sit well with me and kind of defeats the whole purpose of us being in the tournament.

I think we did all we could as far as due diligence. We were willing to find a middle ground but there's only so many hours in which we can field a team and all. And, as far as I can tell, the other team wasn't very much interested in making it work. We did what we could but what I think what I and some others on the team are feeling is a bit of shame about just how we've come by our gaudy record (If the tournament ended today, we'd be among the top 80 or so teams despite the fact that we've only played 2 games and split them.). And along with that, a desire to somehow do our part to set this right. Even though we've benefited by it this kind of scheduling isn't fair.

Winning by forfeit though just doesn't sit well with me and kind of defeats the whole purpose of us being in the tournament.

Realistically, we were never aiming for the elimination rounds but to get some experience for the ATs. And to get a core of players working together and playing regularly. In those respects, it's been a big success. I can't really tell about activity as I joined shortly before things kicked off but in terms of where we're at as a team, I think we've come a long way. We've got a ways to go, sure, but at the very least we're practicing regularly. And thinking about strategy for the rounds and how we should play them - just think of all the work we put into coming up with a game plan for this latest round. That's not wasted effort, that's a sunken investment in our continuing improvement. So even though we might not be playing a lot of games in the tournament we're still gaining that valuable experience. If you ask me, it's been great. But I would like to actually test our team against some fair competition.
