Oh, Like I Wasn't Depressed Enough
Sobbing on the inside. Gnashed teeth on the outside.
The sole redeeming feature here is that the person involved was eventually vindicated. Cleared of all charges, released, which shows that our creaking justice system can still occasionally work.
But, then, you have to wonder how many of these cases have not worked out in the favor of the plantif. How many of these people are hidden away and will never receive any sort of restitution or justice.
After the red-tinted goggles of rage have been raised, though, the thinking here is positive. After all, the person involved was eventually exonerated and even if the report was redacted and national security used as a pretext for hiding our flaws, it's far better than if such a trial had never occurred at all. The system works, justice was served, and public outrage - however delayed - will serve to prevent further such mistakes. And I hope this guy gets a huge payday in the civil suit that's now been allowed to proceed.
But the dark thought which soon follows is how many similar cases don't we know about? How many more have suffered, are suffering, and will suffer similar fates in silence?
