You'll Never Go Broke Underestimating the Stupidity of the American Public

Right. This is frightening stuff. Basically, the electorate is shockingly ill-informed about the positions of the various candidates on the single defining issue of the day. Most of them believe the Democrats, especially the frontrunners are to the left, so to speak, of their actual positions, putting them closer to the public's opinion of what should be done (This applies to the Repubs as well, since those polled figure Romney's more dovish than Mr. Bush when, in reality, Multiple Choice Mitt is going to be following in his wake, like a lifeboat caught in the undertow of a sinking liner. McCain, too, is seen to be more inclined to withdraw troops when, if anything, he's even more hawkish than Bush the Younger.). Which is surely distorting the race somewhat. I think it's important to remember that Clinton isn't the liberal candidate here, for one, no matter what the right's noise machine is going to say about here, she's moderate verging on conservative. She voted for the Iraq War and has never really regreted it, only how it's been prosecuted. If only there were someone out there, some kind of established apparatus for disseminating news and opinion throughout the body public, who could make their real positions known.

But, what polls like this make me wonder is what the Democrats have to lose. The vast majority of people think they're going to initiate some kind of withdrawal or pullout as soon as whoever gets elected is inaugurated (Right after legalizing gay marriage and performing an abortion live on network television. That's the liberal plan for America, in case you haven't been paying attention.). And it's not really hurting their chances for getting into office as far as I can tell. The Democrats are basically running away with the race by every measure I've seen so far. So why not just push the chips to the middle of the table here? Why doesn't one of the candidates come out in favor of a withdrawal since everyone thinks that's what they stand for anyway?

Of course, someone already has, but Richardson isn't “serious” now, is he?
